Insomnia Treatment

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I)

CBT-I is an evidence-based treatment for insomnia. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of CBT-I in helping people to:

  1. Fall asleep faster.
  2. Increase total sleep time at night.
  3. Spend less time awake after falling asleep.
  4. Reduce reliance on medication.

CBT-I is recommended by the American College of Physicians as a first-line treatment for insomnia. It is also the preferred treatment for chronic insomnia by the National Institutes of Health and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

CBT-I has been shown to be as effective as prescription sleep medication in the short-term treatment of insomnia, and even more effective than sleeping pills in the long term.

The cognitive component of CBT-I addresses the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs a person has about sleep. Cognitive techniques in CBT-I help to examine, reevaluate, and/or replace worries and overly negative thoughts about sleep with more balanced and realistic views.

The behavioral component of CBT-I addresses sleep habits, environmental issues and lifestyle factors that are interfering with your ability to sleep well. The behavioral techniques in CBT-I have been well studied. Treatment plans often include making changes in your sleep schedule and eliminating old habits that have kept your insomnia going over time.
